Challenge

Boots is a British health and beauty retailer and pharmacy chain. It is one of the largest retailers in the UK and Ireland, both in terms of revenue and the number of stores. With over 2000 stores from local pharmacies to large health and beauty branches, Boots receives 400,000+ applicants across all kinds of roles each year. Facing the emerging challenge of high-volume hiring in an increasingly competitive market, Boots was looking for an assessment solution that effectively highlights the right talent who could succeed in a fast-paced working environment, while ensuring a smooth and engaging candidate experience.

Having partnered with Talogy since 2011, Boots has had a great experience with Talogy’s tailored personality and SJT (situational judgement tests) assessment for retail, beauty and pharmacy employees. As the hiring scope expanded to Graduates and Interns, Early Careers, Optical roles, managerial roles and so much more, Boots found itself in need of a new type of assessments, one that combines agility and results – shorter tests, quicker turnaround times, and updated content. They decided to continue with Talogy on this journey for the team’s reliable expertise on talent assessments and thorough understanding of Boot’s evolving talent needs.

Solution:

Talogy used the Hire assessment suite to design a tailored assessment solution that aligned to the diverse roles and requirements. The process rolled out in five steps:

1. Identify the job requirements:

Talogy experts partnered with the Boots team to understand specific role requirements.

2. Recommend targeted assessments:

Talogy then made recommendations on the most relevant assessments for each role – situational judgment tests, Factors for personality, and Logiks for ability and aptitude, to measure the identified key criteria.

3. Create a tailored profile:

Talogy experts created tailored mappings of the ideal competencies for each role based on the job analysis that was shared with Boots for approval.

4. Confirm assessment details:

Boots and Talogy agreed on norm groups, report types, and the content and design of fully customizable “Engagement Screens,” which guide candidates throughout the process with tailored text or multimedia content”.

5. Implement:

The solution was built, integrated, tested, and then implemented.

The solution has now been implemented for a total of ten types of roles – continuously adapting to the evolving business and talent needs of Boots with agility. All the candidates who completed the assessments exited the process with meaningful feedback on their development regardless of the outcome.

Results

Since integrating and launching the new online assessments, the process of implementing the solution for a recruitment need can now be turned around in two or three weeks. Boots has successfully reduced the time to hire by two days. The candidate completion rate has increased from 69% to 89%, and assessments are now completed within eight hours from the start of the candidate’s application, compared to the previous 3.5 days. A recent validation study completed by Talogy and Boots for store team members has shown a strong positive correlation between the assessment results and the performance in role based on the line manager ratings.
