It leaves us feeling a greater sense of self-belief, motivation, and drive. We have more self-compassion, clarity over our direction, and the ability to navigate tricky situations. We can also then influence others with integrity and inspire others to achieve excellence amongst other things.

The opportunity to facilitate this level of transformation is a key reason many are drawn to coaching. However, to enable such positive outcomes consistently, coaches must continuously invest in developing themselves, and there may be no greater area to do so than by honing emotional intelligence in coaching.

The impact of emotional intelligence in coaching

Emotional intelligence is a desirable trait for any member of the workforce to possess, but particularly in a leadership and coaching capacity. An emotionally intelligent coach brings so much more than skills, technique, or experience; they bring a special set of attitudes and awareness. Their heightened level of self-awareness, presence, and intentionality means they are genuinely coachee-focused and leave people feeling more aware, resourceful, and empowered.

Emotional intelligence in coaching amplifies these attitudes because they dig deeper than simply uncovering the coachee’s goals. They are fully invested in the coaching relationship itself and want to understand what’s needed to be successful and set clear parameters to get there. They also make it a point to check in regularly to see how everything is going with their coachee.

Coaching with emotional intelligence means demonstrating:

Authentic presence – being fully attentive to the coachee in the moment, rather than distracted by internal judgements or external pressures

Self-awareness – recognising one’s own assumptions, emotional responses, and potential biases

Emotional regulation – managing reactions appropriately to maintain a constructive coaching space

Empathy and attunement – sensing and responding to both spoken and unspoken signals

Behavioural flexibility – adapting their approach to suit the coachee’s needs, balancing support with appropriate challenge

Developing emotional intelligence in coaching is an ongoing, intentional investment. If we don’t actively put in the effort, it can unintentionally diminish the overall power of coaching at work and, in extreme cases, can even cause harm.

The risks of low emotional intelligence in coaching

When it comes to emotional intelligence and coaching, coaches who lack EI may be unconsciously drawn to coaching to feed their ego and desire to be respected, valued, liked, or needed. When their attitudes and awareness are less than optimal, there is a risk of driving conversations in subtly unhelpful ways.

As humans, we all find ourselves triggered at times, having judgemental thoughts and strong emotional reactions. Without awareness these can derail coaching relationships and lead to projection, collusion, dependence, and maybe even manipulation. For example:

The subtly ‘arrogant’ coach whose unconscious motivation is to be admired for their brilliance. There is almost a complete lack of emotional intelligence coaching in these scenarios. The coach can easily fall into being directive, offering advice out of context, and challenging inappropriately.
Impact: The coachee becomes dependent on the coach’s input and fails to develop independent insight or ownership.

The ‘helper’ or ‘rescuer’ coach who is motivated by a desire to be needed or valued. They might take too much responsibility for the coachee, extend sessions beyond agreed boundaries, avoid holding the coachee accountable, or become overly emotionally involved.
Impact: The coachee may become reliant on the coach, with blurred boundaries reducing the effectiveness of the coaching relationship.

The ‘pleaser’ coach focused on being liked, winning approval, and maintaining harmony. They may collude with coachees and avoid challenge, difficult feedback, or confronting limiting beliefs.
Impact: Conversations remain comfortable, but lack depth, resulting in limited growth or behavioural change.

In all of these scenarios, education on proper emotional intelligence coaching could eradicate a lot of these issues and give the coachee a much better experience and outcome.

How to develop emotional intelligence in coaching

At Talogy, we intentionally promote emotional intelligence in coaching to enable coaches to be fully open, aware, present, and truly in service of their coachees. When you strengthen EI coaching, you don’t just coach differently, you transform the impact of every session.

Here’s how to bring that to life and create an effective coaching relationship:

1. Strengthen self-regard to recognise the value you bring as a coach

In the Inner Game, author and former tennis standout, Timothy Gallwey, reminds us that our performance – both ‘on the court’ and in life – equals our potential minus the interferences that derail it. Our own mindset can form a big part of that interference. For example, so many of us have an ‘inner critic’ asking:

“Am I good enough?”
“Do I have enough to offer?”

These are questions that can pull you out of the moment and hinder effective emotional intelligence coaching efforts. They can make you more cautious, less curious, and more focused on yourself than your coachee.

The shift? Build self-regard, your ability to value and accept yourself.

How to do this in practice:

Reconnect with your ‘why’

Why did you become a coach? What difference do you care about making? Anchor yourself in purpose as it stabilises your confidence.

Let others reflect your strengths

Ask coachees: What do you find most helpful about my coaching?
Then ask yourself: Where is this already true?

When you trust your value, you stop performing and start truly partnering.

2. Create real trust through deep presence

Powerful coaching happens when your coachee feels safe enough to be vulnerable, speak openly, and work on their development. That safety is created through your self-awareness and emotional intelligence as a coach, and how consciously you pay attention and take action on what’s happening in the moment.

How to do this in practice:

Listen intently

Don’t just hear words. Notice tone, pace, and pauses. Author and coaching expert Nancy Kline describes this as “listening with fascination.” When people feel deeply heard, they think better, speak more honestly, and access better solutions.

Step into their world

Ask yourself: What might this feel like from their perspective?
Reflect back what you sense and check it.

Invite the full conversation

Don’t just stay at surface level, think about:

Doubts and fears

Setbacks and frustrations

Ambitions and possibilities

When coachees feel seen – not judged – they become more open, resourceful, and ready to grow.

3. Turn insight into action through accountability

Awareness is powerful, but it’s not enough. Real change happens when your coachee takes ownership of what happens next.

Your role? To enable accountability through strong relationship management.

How to do this in practice:

Co-create the coaching agenda

At the start of each session, align on priorities:

What matters most to them?

What do you notice that matters?

Balance both to keep coaching purposeful and relevant.

Model accountability

Don’t just expect it, demonstrate it.

Ask for feedback on your coaching

Share how you experience their progress and engagement

Be honest, respectful, and clear

This builds mutual responsibility and deeper trust.

Encourage experimentation

Move coachees out of ‘thinking mode’ and into action:

What’s one thing they’ll try?

What will they notice?

What will they learn?

Growth accelerates when coachees test, reflect, and adjust.

Great coaching isn’t about having better answers; it’s about being who you are in the moment:

Grounded in your values

Fully present

Willing to challenge and support

When your emotional intelligence in coaching is strong, everything else becomes easier and more impactful.

Take the next step in emotional intelligence coaching

Continuous learning is important in any profession. When it comes to emotional intelligence and coaching, so much of that learning is introspective and ensuring we create and maintain proper self-awareness. This allows us to be the best coach to those who are depending on us to guide them in their development journey.

If you want to deepen your impact, Talogy’s EMCC-accredited Coaching with Emotional Intelligence programme helps you expand your thinking, challenge long-held beliefs, and elevate your practice. As one recent graduate put it:

“It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced or new coach, this programme will expand your thinking and challenge any assumed constraints that you have. You will learn more about yourself and others than you ever expected.”

Because the most powerful tool in your coaching toolkit isn’t a model or framework – it’s you.

Nine essential elements for modern leadership

The requirements to successfully lead in today’s organisations differ significantly from the past, and leadership hiring and development processes can only be effective if the attitudes, skills, and behaviours measured align with demands of the modern, complex world.
