Rethinking performance in the era of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During a recent trip for a work conference, I took an Uber with a driver from Brazil. Our conversation began in English and followed the familiar rhythm of casual small talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the conversation became more personal, especially when he described his experience as an immigrant and the challenges he had faced across workplaces, he paused and opened Google Translate on his phone. He spoke in Portuguese. I responded in English. The system translated in real time, and the conversation continued without interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an industrial-organisational psychologist, I have long been interested in how people adapt to changing work environments, especially in the moments that fall outside formal organisational settings. What stood out from my rideshare experience was not the novelty of the technology, but how naturally a digital tool could expand a human interaction. In that moment, communication was no longer limited by shared language. It is the kind of moment often described through the language of digital intelligence: a person using digital tools, judgement, and adaptability to navigate a real-world interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiences like this are no longer out of the ordinary. Work and daily life now unfold in environments where digital systems continuously shape how people interact, learn, and perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, should organisations build a strategy around digital intelligence to improve and measure workplace performance? To answer that question, we believe it is necessary to first define what digital intelligence is and then examine what is really changing in this era of AI.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is digital intelligence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence is reshaping how work gets done across nearly every industry. Not surprisingly, every major technological change brings new vocabulary with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Air travel gave us jet lag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Email gave us spam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Computing gave us multitasking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way, the digital era has introduced terms meant to capture the capabilities people need in technology-rich environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital intelligence is one such term. Broadly, it refers to the social, emotional, and cognitive abilities people use to navigate digital life effectively. Over the past decade, it has been especially useful in conversations about digital citizenship, online safety, and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Digital intelligence refers to the social, emotional, and cognitive abilities people use to navigate digital life effectively.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the literature and in practice, digital intelligence is often framed as a combination of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Familiarity with digital tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adaptability in technology-enabled environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Judgement in the use of digital information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effectiveness in digitally mediated interactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This framing is useful in capturing a wide range of behaviours that matter in modern work. However, that same breadth can become a limitation in a workplace context. When a concept tries to cover everything \u2013 from tool use to judgement to behavioural outcomes \u2013 it becomes harder to determine exactly what is driving effective performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is especially important when it comes to <a href=\"http:\/\/talogy.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-can-ai-help-in-the-workplace\/\">AI in the workplace<\/a>. Core human capabilities such as reasoning, personality, and the capacity to learn are not new. What is changing is the environment in which those capabilities are expressed. AI is altering the pace of work, the nature of decisions, and the way people interact both with information and one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, we do not see digital intelligence as a hard-wired trait that people simply possess or lack. It is better understood as a broad label for functioning in a digital world. For organisations, however, the more useful question is narrower: what capabilities help people perform effectively when AI and digital tools are embedded in the flow of work?<a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impact of digital intelligence on the workplace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As new technologies move into the mainstream, familiar ideas are often repackaged in ways that feel timely and compelling. But new language does not always signal a fundamentally new human attribute. This is because technological change does not redefine human attributes; it simply changes the demands placed on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On one hand, work can become faster, more supported, and more efficient. Information is easier to access and cognitive load is often reduced. On the other hand, greater reliance on systems can change how work is experienced. People may feel more productive while becoming less directly engaged in judgement, problem solving, or decision ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dynamic aligns with well-established findings in organisational research, including automation bias and skill degradation, where reliance on systems can gradually reshape human engagement with core tasks. As a result, organisations are facing a more fundamental question: <em>What does effective <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/talogy.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-to-drive-employee-performance\/\"><em>employee performance<\/em><\/a><em> look like when humans and AI produce outcomes together?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional definitions of performance focused primarily on output and efficiency. In AI-enabled environments, successful performance increasingly includes humans deploying digital intelligence in a number of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The quality of judgement applied alongside system recommendations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to evaluate when to rely on or override AI outputs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustained situational awareness in technology-mediated workflows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continued learning and development, not just task completion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective employee performance is not measured by productivity alone. It is also about how sound judgement, learning, and adaptability are sustained in evolving systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From digital intelligence to digital dexterity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where digital dexterity becomes a more useful construct for the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If digital intelligence is a broad concept about functioning effectively in a digital world, digital dexterity is a more narrow workplace competency. At Talogy, we define digital dexterity as the capability to rapidly adopt new technologies, either through adeptly grasping their usage (where needed) or through understanding their impact and empowering others to use them as needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We define digital dexterity as the capability to rapidly adopt new technologies, either through adeptly grasping their usage or through understanding their impact and empowering others to use them as needed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It refers to how effectively people adapt, learn, and perform when digital tools and AI are embedded in the flow of work. In short: how well employees can utilise AI in the workplace. It shifts the focus from a broad and fuzzy category of digital intelligence in everyday life to what capabilities enable practical expression of performance in evolving conditions. It helps explain why some people adapt more quickly, apply tools more thoughtfully, and help others do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Uber example from earlier is a simple, yet powerful example of this in practice. The driver did not need to master digital life at that moment. He recognised a barrier, selected a tool, and used it in a way that smoothly interacted with his passengers. That is the kind of practical adaptation organisations increasingly need at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This distinction is not just semantic. It shapes how organisations approach selection, development, and performance management in AI-enabled environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications of digital intelligence for organisations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As AI becomes more deeply embedded in work design, organisations are moving beyond questions of adoption to questions of <a href=\"http:\/\/talogy.com\/en-gb\/knowledge-hub\/workforce-agility\/\">workforce agility<\/a> and development. As a result, several questions are becoming increasingly important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How is confidence in human judgement maintained alongside system support?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are digital tools enabling learning or unintentionally reducing it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How is performance defined when outcomes are jointly produced by humans and AI?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are not purely technology questions. They are questions about how people develop and apply their strengths over time in tandem <em>with<\/em> technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology changes, human potential remains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term digital intelligence reflects a meaningful effort to describe how advanced technologies are reshaping modern life. It is useful as a broad framework, particularly in education and digital citizenship. But when the goal is to understand and improve performance at work, a more focused lens is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core attributes that drive performance have not fundamentally changed; the context in which they are expressed has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why we believe organisations should focus less on broad labels and more on practical, work-relevant, and durable capabilities, such as digital dexterity. To meet these modern-day challenges, it is paramount to understand how established human strengths translate into effective performance in increasingly AI-enabled work systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Success, then, will not be defined by coining a new term or the speed of technology adoption alone.
