{"id":58280,"date":"2022-06-13T12:00:05","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talogy.com\/?p=58280"},"modified":"2026-04-02T10:08:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:08:29","slug":"how-to-improve-dei-metrics-6-challenges-to-overcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/talogy.com\/en-ae\/blog\/how-to-improve-dei-metrics-6-challenges-to-overcome\/","title":{"rendered":"How to improve DEI metrics: 6 challenges to overcome"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Harvard Business Review Analytic Services (HBR-AS) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/pages\/dei-metrics-.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study on workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)<\/a> with sobering results. Despite making DEI initiatives a high strategic priority, only 33% of leaders say they&#8217;ve greatly improved their workplace. Even fewer employees (29%) think their organisation is where it should be with respect to DEI. The results beg the question, why are organisations struggling so much?\n\nSeven experts weighed in on the issue in a panel discussion dedicated to workplace DEI (Silva, K., et al., 2022). They agreed that challenges are partly due to DEI metrics. Before discussing metrics, I need to clearly define (and uncouple) diversity, equity, and inclusion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diversity<\/strong> is the presence of individual differences, like race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equity<\/strong> is fair treatment and access to resources for all people, regardless of individual differences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inclusion<\/strong> is the degree that all people feel welcomed, heard, and safe to fully participate in groups or other processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I can highlight six key metric challenges that limit progress on DEI initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Metrics are not universal.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research participation is low.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sentiment is difficult to capture.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data are difficult to interpret.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Success is hard to define.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Results are difficult to communicate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many challenges that prevent organisations from successfully improving workplace DEI.
